We have hopes of upcoming summer sun in the UK – and with that, we’ve found a renewed need to lounge on a beach with a good book and an endless stretch of afternoon. Britain might not be known for a reliably hot midsummer, but many of its beaches have now been confirmed to be the best in Europe.
The Blue Flag and Seaside Awards have been revealed for 2026, highlighting the cleanest, safest and most environmentally well-managed beaches across the continent. The awards are managed by Keep Britain Tidy in England, and the Blue Flag is a globally-recognised label for the best beaches, marinas and inland bathing waters.
This year, a total of 128 sites – comprising 126 beaches, a marina and an inland bathing water – have been presented with awards. Of these, 61 beaches have met the high standards required for a Blue Flag award. From Devon to Norfolk, many of the country’s coastlines have received the prestigious award, including Bournemouth Beach.
It may well be known for hen and stag dos, but Bournemouth beach is also favoured for being one of the warmest and most swimmable patches of coastline in the UK. At this classic British seaside, you will find a promenade and footpath that takes you to Hengistbury Head to the east and Sandbanks to the south, arcades, ice-creams, and everything else you want at a beach.
Underneath its famous cliffs, the spot is undeniably popular in the summer months, but, as the Blue Flag notes, it is very clean and well-managed.
I’m a fan of Bournemouth beach, and visit every year. The powdery sand and turquoise water surprise me every time – I never expect to see such a beautiful coastline in the UK. Although certain areas can get really busy on heatwave days and summer months, the further along the promenade you walk, the closer you’ll get to a coveted quiet corner where you can hone in on the lapping waves and their healing properties.
I also love to do the walk from Bournemouth Beach to Sandbanks, another picturesque beach just under two hours away. The walk takes you along the candy-coloured beach huts and cliffs – it’s such a peaceful way to spend a morning.
Alongside Bournemouth Beach, Sandbanks Beach also received a Blue Flag award this year, adding to its legacy of receiving the award every year since it began. Other beaches included Whitley Bay, Sea Palling Beach and Porthmeor Beach.
