Before the era of social media and instant messaging, the Thai community relied on traditional media to stay informed, connected, and united. Recognizing this vital need, Oywan Sawyer (คุณอ้อยหวาน ซอว์เยอร์) founded Las Vegas News in 1999 and served as its Editor-in-Chief until her passing in 2019.
As the first Thai newspaper in Las Vegas, Las Vegas News has grown into the largest and most widely recognized Thai publication in Nevada. Throughout her distinguished career, Ms. Oywan received numerous State, Congressional, Senatorial, and National awards in recognition of her dedication, vision, and service to the community.
A true pioneer, Oywan Sawyer was among the first three Thai settlers to arrive in Las Vegas in the 1970s. She played a pivotal role in shaping the Thai community as it exists today. Through Las Vegas News, she championed local Thai businesses, highlighted community events, and celebrated the achievements of individuals—preserving the history, culture, and collective story of the Thai community in Southern Nevada. In many ways, the publication served as a vital bridge of connection during a time when such networks were limited, fulfilling a role much like social media does today.
All editions of Las Vegas News, from its earliest publications to the present day, are archived and preserved in the UNLV Library Special Collections—an enduring testament to its historical and cultural significance.
Evolving with the times, Las Vegas News has successfully expanded into digital media and is now accessible online. By embracing modern technology, the publication continues to serve its readers while maintaining its position as a trusted and recognized leader in Thai media.
Today, Las Vegas News remains deeply committed to supporting and strengthening the Thai community in Las Vegas, staying true to the mission upon which it was founded while adapting to the preferences of a new generation of digital readers.

ก่อนยุคของสื่อสังคมออนไลน์และการสื่อสารแบบทันทีทันใด ชุมชนชาวไทยต้องพึ่งพาสื่อดั้งเดิมในการรับรู้ข่าวสาร สร้างความเชื่อมโยง และหล่อหลอมความเป็นหนึ่งเดียวกัน ด้วยความตระหนักถึงความสำคัญดังกล่าว คุณอ้อยหวาน ซอว์เยอร์ (Oywan Sawyer) ได้ก่อตั้งหนังสือพิมพ์ Las Vegas News ขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 2542 และดำรงตำแหน่งบรรณาธิการบริหารจนถึงวาระสุดท้ายของชีวิตในปี พ.ศ. 2562

หนังสือพิมพ์ Las Vegas News ทุกฉบับ ตั้งแต่ฉบับปฐมฤกษ์จนถึงปัจจุบัน ได้รับการจัดเก็บและอนุรักษ์ไว้ในคลังเอกสารพิเศษของห้องสมุดมหาวิทยาลัยเนวาดา ลาสเวกัส (UNLV Special Collections) ซึ่งเป็นหลักฐานอันทรงคุณค่าทางประวัติศาสตร์และวัฒนธรรม
