Officials of the Marine and Coastal Resources Department and residents of Ko Yao Yai in the southern coastal province of Pha-ngan have rescued two wounded bottlenose dolphins which beached ashore at Aao Klong Son beach.
On Tuesday, villagers of Ban Ya Mee on Yao Yai island stumbled on the two dolphins on the beach with wounds on their bodies and appear exhausted. One is about 2.3 metres long and the other 1.4 metres long.
The villagers then alerted the marine and coastal resources office which immediately sent a team to examine the two dolphins which were removed from the sandy beach and had them sent to a rehabilitation centre in Phuket.
Mr Prathom Rasamee, director of Phang-nga marine and coastal resources office, said bottlenose dolphins usually stay in pack of up to a few hundred at a time and they love to race in competition with boats in the sea.
The dolphins can swim up to 40.5 kilometres per hour.
