Traveller’s Tales is our insight into the world of some extraordinary people and their tales of bravery, daring and sometimes just pure luck. We talk to adventurers, athletes and those fighting for positive change and find out what it feels like to ski to the North Pole, dodge polar bears, walk in the wake of elephants or sleep underneath a Russian motorway. Following on from our series of live events in London, these Zoom conversations have been recorded to transport those with a thirst for adventure whilst their travels are temporarily on hold.
Interview with Ben Saunders, Polar explorer
Ben Saunders is one of the world’s leading polar explorers and a record-breaking long-distance skier who has covered more than 4,000 miles on foot in the polar regions since 2001. He has led challenging polar expeditions and completed the 105-day round trip from Ross Island off the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back again that defeated Captain Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton. He also holds the record for the longest solo Arctic journey by a Briton. In this episode, we discuss what drives him to take these momentous challenges, his training for each one and the perils of eating fish stew in polar bear territory.
