On Location peels back the curtain on some of your favourite films, television shows, and more. This time, we ask: where was The Dog Stars filmed?
The year is 2035. Along a mountain range on the south side of Denver, survivors are navigating an unprecedented, post-pandemic world. A deadly flu outbreak has wiped out a vast majority of the human population, and many who have survived remain with a debilitating blood disease.
This is the premise of Ridley Scott’s latest blockbuster, starring Jacob Elordi as young pilot Hig, Margaret Qualley as Cima and Josh Brolin as Bangley. While Bangley has no intentions of leaving the efficient homestead he and Hig have settled into, Hig is determined to track down other survivors, frequently embarking on tracking missions alongside his trusty dog, Jasper.
As these stories unfold in a post-apocalyptic world far from crumbling metropolises, the natural world plays a major role in Scott’s latest movie. While set in Canada, filming took place in Italy between April and June 2025. “The size and scale of the production footprint in Italy was ideal for what we needed,” says The Dog Stars production designer Chris Seager. “We found a combination of quality locations that could convincingly represent Colorado, while also being relatively close together. This allowed us to work much more efficiently from a production point of view.”
“We also considered Canada,” says Chris. “But ultimately Italy offered the best combination of location quality, scale and practical logistics. Being able to concentrate so many of the locations within a manageable area was a huge advantage for the production, helping us maximise our time and resources.”
