On Location peels back the curtain on some of your favourite films, television shows, and more. This time, we take a look at People We Meet on Vacation.
Author Emily Henry’s romantic novels have become mainstays in the BookTok community and beyond in the last few years. Her stories feel like 90s rom-coms: relatable female main characters, dashing love interests, and aspirational backdrops. So it was only a matter of time before one of her novels was adapted for the screen. On 9 January 2026, a feature-length film starring Emily Bader and Tom Blyth was finally released.
In People We Meet on Vacation, we follow travel writer Poppy Wright and Alex Nilsen as they navigate their friends-to-lovers trajectory over the years. The plot homes in on their annual week’s summer holiday throughout their friendship, revealing their history to the viewer through a series of flashbacks that take place across the world, with scenes set everywhere from Ohio to Tuscany. But where, exactly, did Netflix film the adaptation?
Where was People We Meet on Vacation filmed?
Spain
At the beginning of the film, we learn that Alex’s brother, David, is getting married in Spain, and that both Poppy and Alex will attend, bringing the pair together in the film’s present-day timeline. It’s perhaps unsurprising, then, that the cast and crew headed to Spain to film. It might surprise you more, however, to learn that northeastern Spain also stood in as Squamish, Canada, where our main characters head for a camping trip in a flashback.
A Spanish landscape also stood in for Tuscany, another flashback location which Alex and Poppy visit with their partners at the time. The Catalonian village of Llagostera takes a starring role in these scenes. The scene, which mimics the book cover, where Poppy and Alex recline on sunloungers, meanwhile, was shot near Casa de Santa Clotilde, where the wedding is taking place, at Sa Boadella Beach.
