Where is House of the Dragon Season 3 filmed?
With House of the Dragon back on our screens as of June 2026 for its third season, there are sure to be plenty of new awe-inspiring locations.
Primarily, the cast returned to Wales’ jaw-dropping landscapes to film the third season, with filming taking place across Anglesey, Conwy and Gwynedd. In an interview with Lucy Owen on BBC Radio Wales, actor Freddie Fox (who plays the role of Ser Gwayne Hightower) praised the filming locations, saying, “I love filming there. I was over-awed on set more or less every day.”
According to the BBC, season three filming locations include “Beaumaris Pier on Anglesey, Craig Yr Undeb [Union Rock] in Gwynedd, and Ffynon Llugwy, a lake in Eryri National Park – also known as Snowdonia.”
According to the Welsh Government website, filming the show in the country is even more of a partnership than it might seem at first. In a press release published in March 2026 on gov.wales, it was stated: “The second and third seasons of the drama received Production Funding from Creative Wales, with £674,600 provided for season three, the investment is expected to generate £6.7 million for the Welsh economy.”
Kevin De La Noy, executive producer on House of the Dragon, said: “House of the Dragon Cast and Crew were delighted to return to Wales, to a landscape and locale that adds such visual power and vibrant dimension to the storytelling.”
Where is Dragonstone Castle located?
As the headquarters of the powerful House Targaryen, Dragonstone is one of the show’s most iconic castles and not for the faint-hearted. Its high stone walls are beside the looming Dragonmont volcano, which lures in some fiery friends that give the island its name. The actual filming location could not be further from this, found across the idyllic North Welsh county of Gwynedd. Old Welsh quarries within this region were used to create exteriors for Dragonstone, while the stunning landscape of vast lakes and rolling hills provided visuals for the surrounding Dragonstone island. The most notable attraction in the area is Snowdonia National Park, popular for its plethora of adventurous hiking routes as well as for its TV and film backdrops, with credits from Doctor Who to King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.
