Uruguay has emerged the winner of Group A of the World Cup after thumping host Russia 3-0 in their encounter at the Samara Arena in Samara tonight. Luis Suarez gave Uruguay an early lead in the 9th minute when he put in a low free kick from just outside the penalty box. And 14 minutes later, the Russians deflected a goal shot by Denis Cheryshev into the net. Things got worse for the Russians who got down to 10 men after defender Igor Smolnikov was given the second yellow card. Edinson Cavani made it 3-0 for Uruguay just minutes before the final whistle. The victory places Uruguay at the top of Group A and propels it into the next round along with Russia.
