UK travel insurance companies are receiving a high volume of customer queries amidst the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The prices of aviation fuel have increased, and many travellers are concerned about the possibility of flight cancellations amid fuel shortages. Up to 40 per cent of Europe’s jet fuel is sourced via the Straight of Hormuz, which lies between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, and is currently closed.

In some parts of the world, flights have been grounded, and airfares have sharply increased to offset rising fuel costs. So far, British and Irish airlines have said they’re confident they have enough supplies to cover the rest of April.

“While our summer holidays certainly haven’t been cancelled yet, there is currently a worry that we may see widespread flight cancellations if the ongoing crisis in the Middle East has a knock-on effect on the UK travel industry,” says Rhys Jones, travel insurance expert at Go.Compare travel.

“There are a few reasons this could happen: firstly, conflict zones are forcing airlines to reroute or avoid entire regions. Secondly, sanctions and conflict are affecting fuel supply routes – with concerns rising that demand for jet fuel in the UK could outstrip our supply, if issues persist. Additionally, another issue is knock-on delays, resulting in crew timing issues, missed slots, and cancellations elsewhere.

“If you have a holiday booked, we recommend keeping a close eye on the news, as well as looking for any updates from your airline or holiday provider.”

Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary told Sky News: “The fuel companies are happy there won’t be disruption till early May. But if the war continues, we do run the risk of supply disruptions in Europe in May and June, and obviously, we hope the war will finish sooner than that, and the risk to supply will be eliminated.”

“If your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to an alternative flight or a refund from the provider you booked with,” says Rhys.

“We would definitely recommend reaching out to your airline or holiday provider in the first instance, as compensation through your travel insurance is unlikely – this would fall outside of the remit of your insurance.”

“Cancel For Any Reason” (CFAR) travel insurance is a premium add-on or policy that allows you to cancel your trip for reasons not normally covered by standard travel insurance and still receive some reimbursement. It’s designed for travellers who want maximum flexibility, especially when plans might change unexpectedly, such as due to work schedule changes. They must be purchased soon after booking your trip and often come at a premium cost.
