This artsy beach town is the perfect staycation in northern England

Is Tynemouth one of the most fetching northern beach towns? It could well be. This captivating part of the coastline has a rich history, a great local community, one of the best fish restaurants in the UK, two beautiful Blue Flag beaches, and a third at neighbouring Whitley Bay. Let me share why I love the place and some insider tips.

Riley’s Fish Shack

Nigel John

Just in May, the area’s wild and wonderful coastline was crowned alongside some of the UK’s finest, with Tynemouth Longsands, King Edward’s Bay and Whitley Bay all keeping their prestigious Blue Flag and Seaside Awards. Add to this Riley’s Fish Shack, recommended by Rick Stein and, more recently, by The Good Food Guide, and your next staycation plans are sorted.

Back to logistics, though, from Newcastle just jump on the Metro and in 30 minutes you can be beside the seaside in this pretty spot. What I love is that you can easily book a stay on the bonny Northumberland coast, where the beaches are vast and dramatic, or in Newcastle if the city is more your thing. Here are my tips for Tynemouth and beyond.

Things to do in Tynemouth

Browse Tynemouth Market

Set in the sheltered Victorian station, you can literally step into Tynemouth’s flea market as you step off the Metro – there are two covered market platforms with around 150 stalls helmed by local businesses, including fruit and flowers, vintage clothing and antiques, art and photography, second-hand toys and vinyl, plants, masses of street food stalls and other odds and sods. I’d recommend starting early and grabbing breakfast at one of the artisan bakeries – Pure Knead started at the market – and a cuppa from indie Ouseburn Coffee Company, then wandering the markets for a while to spy treasures.
