It’s not uncommon for family holidays to cost significantly more than was bargained for. Once flights, transfers, meals and accommodation are accounted for, jetsetting can do some serious damage to the bank balance – even more so when little ones are in tow.
With that in mind, it pays to make every penny count. Luckily, we needn’t keep our finger on the pulse of how much the day-to-day of holidaying in our favourite destinations costs – as the Post Office does all the hard work for us.
The 18th annual Post Office Family Holiday Report reveals the European holiday hotspots that offer families the best value for money.
The latest report analyses the average costs of common holiday purchases. These include a cup of coffee, a local beer and a glass of wine, suncream, insect repellent, and a three-course family meal with wine and soft drinks.
There’s plenty of movement on the rankings in this year’s report, with last year’s most affordable destination, Marmaris, now in seventh place. It’s the popular Portuguese Algarve that claims the title of the summer’s most affordable family destination, with the holiday basket totalling £139.65 – a 2.7 per cent decrease on last year.
The second most affordable destination is the Bulgarian resort of Sunny Beach, although costs have increased by 9.3 per cent in just one year, most likely a consequence of Bulgaria joining the eurozone in January. Lanzarote is third, while Menorca makes a surprising appearance as a new entry at fourth, followed by the Spanish Costa Brava, another new entry.
