What are we eating right now – and how are we eating it? It’s the question at the heart of the UK’s Top New Restaurant Awards, and the question our judging panel debated as they narrowed down the previous year’s openings to just the very best. And at its core, the British dining scene right now is getting personal. We’re gravitating towards cooking that tells a story, narrated by passionate chefs. In Sevenoaks, Maria Bradford (our Best New Chef) is challenging perceptions of Sierra Leone through her dishes at Shwen Shwen; at 2210 by NattyCanCook, Nathaniel Mortley is putting his spin on Caribbean food in South London. British ingredients are getting their time in the spotlight – at Norah, run by One To Watch Claire Hanrahan, Irish recipes are made using Scottish produce in Edinburgh; at The Refectory, dishes are centred around the farm. This year, we’ve been feeling nostalgic: you’ll find a handful of handsome boozers with excellent menus among the 2026 winners; old-school puddings at Ravneet Gill’s Gina, and a much-talked-about plate of bangers and mash at our Readers’ Favourite, Willy’s. And we’re heading out of the city centre and into the neighbourhoods and suburbs, proving that community is more important than ever before. Most joyfully, though, by reading about the winners of the UK’s Top New Restaurants (and visiting them), you’ll be reminded that eating out is supposed to be fun. Do as the judges have done, and free yourself from buttoned-up dining rooms that serve fussy plates. Why bother, when you can eat playful dishes (prawn lollipops! Rasta pasta!) in convivial restaurants where unfettered pleasure is top priority.
