Many Welsh castles were built by Englishmen (or Normans), but not this one. Two miles outside the border town of Welshpool sits the strikingly red Powis Castle, built by Welsh prince Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn in the mid-1200s. Later developments on the site had more of an international flavour. Italian and French styles influenced its famous terraced baroque gardens, still full of statues, yew hedges and extravagant topiary today. Its state bedroom also has a balustrade inspired by Louis XIV’s palace at Versailles.
