2026 is a big year for astronomical events. The year began with the launch of Artemis II, launching a brave crew of astronauts on a mission around the dark side of the Moon and back, paving the way for moon landings in the coming years. An annular solar eclipse followed in March, albeit only visible from Antarctica, before March brought with it a total lunar eclipse and Spring Equinox Auroras.
On the evening of 12 August, many of us in the UK will be settling into an outdoor spot to catch an impressive solar eclipse. While the UK isn’t in the path of totality (you’ll have to jet to Iceland and Spain to witness a total solar eclipse), it’s estimated that the moon will cover around 90 to 96 per cent of the sun’s surface.
However, that isn’t the only treat the night sky has in store for many of us on 12 August – as this date is also when the Perseid meteor shower peaks. But what are the Perseids, how likely are we to spot shooting stars, and will the weather be clear enough to warrant losing a few winks after the drama of the solar eclipse?
What is the Perseid meteor shower?
When comets pass close to the sun, pieces break off due to the extreme heat. The Perseid meteor shower comes as a result of the comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, which has a 133-year orbit. While Earth doesn’t come into direct contact with the comet’s orbit every year, it does pass through the dust of cloudy debris, containing meteorites. As a result, the debris often enters the Earth’s atmosphere and burns up at an average speed of 36 miles per second, creating a sparkling light show when sky conditions allow.
When is the Perseid meteor shower 2026?
The peak of the Perseid meteor shower is the night of 12 – 13 August. However, the shower is technically active 17 July – 24 August, offering plenty more chances to spot a shooting star.
