Since 2011, Game of Thrones has inspired fantasy-loving travellers to high-tail it to destinations all over the world. The original series, based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, follows the power and politics of characters in the mythical world of Westeros.

Several spin-offs and prequels followed, including House of the Dragon, which premiered in 2022 and stars Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Milly Alcock and Olivia Cooke and the more recent A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. While naturally, much of the fantasy series involved heavy CGI and post-production, all three series were shot in incredible otherworldly locations, from Northern Ireland and Iceland to Dubrovnik.

And now, the first feature film in the Game of Thrones world has been announced. Titled Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, we’re yet to know exactly what the movie will entail, but likely the film will follow Aegon I Targaryen, otherwise known as Aegon the Conqueror. In the books and subsequent series, he is hailed as the founder of the Targaryen dynasty and the first King of the Seven Kingdoms. Variety reports that the film will be written by Beau Willimon (formerly showrunner of House of Cards) and was announced as part of Warner Bros.’ “2027 and beyond” slate.

As they’re yet to start filming, we’re not sure where the film will be shot – but we can hazard a guess. Below, find the places we’d love to see a new Game of Thrones world come to life.

Wales

With its vast, sprawling beaches, soaring peaks and deep valleys, Wales is an obvious choice for a fantasy world. House of the Dragon was partly filmed here, at various locations including the lakes and quarries of Gwynedd county, which doubled as the lands around Dragonstone, The Vale and the Riverlands. Since part of a Targaryen world has already been created here, we wouldn’t be surprised if the crew headed back here for Aegon’s Conquest.
