Sea Containers

For a festive waterside lunch, scenic Sea Containers serve a homely four-course Christmas feast with all the classics. This year, it starts with a caviar, new potato and crème fraiche amuse-bouche before starters of celeriac with apple, hazelnuts, truffle and cured salmon with lemon, pumpernickel, and sorrel. For the main event, go traditional with the roasted turkey with stuffing, pigs in blankets, and cranberry jus. Other options include sirloin with king oyster mushrooms and winter black truffles, or for the fish lovers; there’s stone bass with sea herbs and beurre blanc. They each come with duck fat potatoes, parsnips and sprouts (it’s not Christmas without them). There’s Christmas pudding with brandy cream or bread and butter pudding with ginger custard. You’ll need a postprandial stroll along the south bank after this.

This year, Rick Stein’s peaceful riverside restaurant is open on December 25 for anyone who wants to indulge in a comforting five-course supper. Naturally, there’s seafood on the menu: Cornish crab and prawn cocktail followed by hand-dived scallops and black truffle, but the mains are surprisingly fish-free. Instead, they’re staying close to the classics with the likes of turkey with sausage meat stuffing, pigs in blankets and all the trimmings, roast rib of beef or a tasty-sounding shallot tarte tatin. The dessert selection has more festive flavours – expect chocolate and Amaretto or orange and Cointreau tarts alongside the obligatory boozy Christmas pud.
