A base jumper was left dangling 175m above the ground after his parachute got caught on a cliff face in Thailand.

Austrian Johannes Grasser, 28, became trapped after leaping off the peak of Khao Ok Thalu in the country’s Phatthalung province on Monday morning.

It is thought a gust of wind blew him back against the rocks, causing the canopy to snag on an outcrop.

Video footage showed him suspended helplessly on the side of the mountain as a rescue operation was launched.

He was eventually brought down safely by abseilers more than five hours later.

The Phatthalung Rescue Team said in a statement on Facebook that the parachutist had been taken to hospital with a wounded leg.

“A little injury, everyone is safe,” it added, describing the rescue operation, which was watched by the governor of the province, as a “success”.

Local media reported a villager had heard calls for help while doing housework at around 8.30am.

He raised the alarm after spotting the parachute stuck on the side of the mountain.
