New Business Traveller: Priya Ahluwalia on using Marrakech as a shoot backdrop and her cultural travel habits

Who was the most interesting person you met on this trip?

It’s really hard to say who was the most interesting person I met on this trip because we worked with a big crew of local Moroccans who were so lovely. But I would have to say Yazid, who was our fixer, was definitely a real character. He knew everything about everyone and was really funny.

What was the best thing you ate?

We went to Plus61 on the last night, and that was my favourite meal of the trip. Great food, great atmosphere, exactly what we needed after a big shoot day. It was the first proper sit-down meal we’d all had together since arriving, so we went all out. Tuna tartare, prawn toast, gyozas, crab, beef, lamb, green salad, roast sweet potatoes with yoghurt and pickled ginger. A real mix, a proper feast. The cocktails were great too. The atmosphere was relaxed but buzzy, exactly the kind of place you want to land in at the end of a big shoot day. Yazid, our local producer, knew the owner, so we ended up staying late. We were the last ones out of the building. Everyone was tired but really happy, and it was just lovely to sit with the whole team and enjoy that together after such an intense few days.

Did you buy any souvenirs?

No, I didn’t, unfortunately, due to the busy schedule. But I will definitely be going back to the markets on another trip!

How does the fashion there inspire you?

I think what was really interesting when I was looking around in Marrakech, especially when I think about the shoot we were on, was the way people mix their traditional dress with sportswear. That was a very regular uniform I noticed, and it could have been due to comfort, climate or what they were actually doing in a day, but I found that to be very interesting because it looked so editorial.
