Yes, there is a market, but the big draw at Cathedral Gardens is its covered, twinkly winter ice rink that sits prettily between the city’s cathedral and its National Football Museum. This year, there’s a new ice path to get your skates on and literally twirl (or unintentionally somersault) around the Christmas tree. Festive tunes will be filling the air with glad tidings, nearby stalls will be selling hot food, including some rather good pancakes, and there will, of course, be drinks – lots of them.

King Street

It’s a big gathering spot for upmarket shopping of luxury goods around King Street, but the season of cheer is a virtual round-the-world trip for foodies. The Christmas deli stalls are in full global force – from Greek halloumi fries to Salford rum. Italian deli, Ballaro, serves fresh cannelloni and arancini, while El Gato Negro brings Mediterranean flavours to their seating area. Nearby Market Street, meanwhile, will be home to various stalls of talented craftspeople and producers, from tweed hats to festive candles.
