The Pollution Control Department has sought public cooperation to properly store chemicals for industrial or agricultural uses to prevent them from leaking into waterways during the onset of the rainy season.
PCD director-general Mrs Sunee Piyapanpong said Monday that during the onset of the rainy season, the quality of water in most waterways and water sources would get worse with the increase of hazardous chemicals and pollutants washed down by rains.
She said the poor water quality with less oxygen content in the water would cause sudden massive death of fish.
She added that during this period fish would eat less, making them weak and vulnerable to attacks from water-borne diseases or from chemicals.
The PDC chief suggested industrial operators to check their water treatment ponds to make sure that they will not overflow allowing waste water to be leaked out into the environment and to properly dispose of their garbage.
