The  Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) will begin distributing  200,000 of the so-called “Maengmoom” or “Spider” cards for train commuters travelling on its Blue and Purple Lines on June 22.

The Ministry of Transport’s Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning director Chaiwat Thongkhamkoon said the cards under the new joint ticketing system   would be distributed  on June 22 and  used the next day or June 23 for travelling on the Blue Line and the Purple Line.

For the joint ticketing system with city bus operator, he expected the Maeng Moon cards to be used for city bus travel in October.

He also said by November this year the cards could be used for travel on Airport Rail Link train service.

Asked on whether the cards could be used with the BTS or skytrain services, he said the ministry has designated the MRTA to hold talks with BTS to settle the joint ticketing system, particularly on business and investment, within this year.

For low-income earners living in Bangkok area and  holding the state welfare cards, he said they could use their cards the same way as the Maengmoom cards starting July 20.

But for low-income earners living outside Bangkok and the provinces, they need to exchange their welfare cards with the Maengmoom cards at the  Dumrongtham  Centres at their provinces for use of the subway train services in Bangkok.

They could later claim back their welfare cards by exchanging them with  the Maengmoom cards, he said.
