Although cooking has been coded as a female activity throughout history, women running and fronting high-profile restaurants are sadly still far too often the exception, rather than the rule. Gender-based best-of lists tend to provoke strong opinions, and plenty of women find them patronising – rather than siloing female chefs and owners off into a separate category, the argument goes, shouldn’t we simply be insisting that there’s room for them everywhere? And of course, we should. But visibility, and creating space for new stars to shine, make a big difference too. With that in mind, we’ve pulled together a list of some of the best female-led restaurants in London to support this International Women’s Day.
