NH Collection Palazzo Verona
The hotel is located in a 14th-century building, but elements from the Roman era are still visible. This rich history marries surprisingly well with the modern and sleek design, and all the communal spaces feel comfortable and welcoming. The rooms vary in both size and character: some feature original frescoes, while others overlook the city’s rooftops. I loved our spacious suite, which featured a large bath that was promptly put into use after a long day of exploring.

The best restaurants in Verona
Osteria Terzo Ponte
When visiting very touristy cities, I like to find some options away from the crowds. Osteria Terzo Ponte is located in Borgo Milano, outside of the old town in a residential neighbourhood, and it’s a locals’ favourite that hardly gets any foreign visitors. During the warmer months, you can have dinner on their leafy garden terrace where crickets are so loud they will make you forget you are even in a city. The food is homely and generous, and celebrates local tradition with a twist. On my last visit, I ate a version of vitello tonnato made with thinly sliced pork instead of veal, a delicate gazpacho with creamy stracciatella cheese and a decadent rocket pesto pasta, which I highly recommend.

Iris
If you are looking for a meal to celebrate a special occasion, or you simply want to treat yourself, Iris is a delight for both the palate and the eyes. The restaurant is located in a building dating back to the 1400s, allowing guests to be surrounded by a piece of the city’s history while enjoying dinner. The meal starts with an aperitivo in the cellar, before guests are welcomed in the main room, adorned with Italian Renaissance frescoes and marble. There are two tasting menus to choose from, as well as an à la carte menu. My favourite dish is one of the chef’s signature creations, the Turanicum Spaghetto with mantis shrimps, wild asparagus and liquorice. At lunchtime, the restaurant offers a tasting menu for €95 (roughly £80), which includes this unique dish.
