Browse the travel-writing section of your local bookshop and there are intrepid accounts of adventures and encounters in all manner of places – from polar ice caps to Middle America, the Hindu Kush to the Australian outback. But with a few notable exceptions, the experiences will more than likely be seen through white eyes.
