Chatuchak market reopens as City Hall considers waiving shop rental fees – Thai PBS World

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will negotiate with the State Railway of Thailand over the waiving of rental fees at Chatuchak weekend market from next month until November.

The famous market, popular among both Thai and foreign tourists, was closed in mid-March as part of the Government’s anti-COVID-19 lockdown measures. It reopens today amid a subdued atmosphere, with most shops remaining shuttered and few shoppers.

Mrs. Walaya Wattanarat, the BMA’s deputy permanent secretary, inspected the market this morning to ensure that all preventive measures are in place, such as temperature checks at the entrances, the wearing of face masks by both shoppers and vendors and social distancing.

Most of the shoppers today were Thais and all were seen wearing face masks, with some wearing face shields. The night market remains closed due to the night curfew.
