An improvised explosive device (IED), allegedly planted by insurgents near Yala’s Mueang district police station, was safely defused on Sunday by a team of explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) officers.

A 15kg gas cylinder, stuffed with explosives, was found placed against the fence of the district police station, where several seized cars and motorcycles are being kept, prompting an EOD team to rush to the site.

The EOD officers initially deployed a robot to check the suspicious device, before using a high-powered water cannonto disrupt its detonation mechanism and moving in to defuse it.

Meanwhile, police said that the explosion on Saturday night, behind the Thammasat pavilion in the municipal area of Yala’s Mueang district, was caused by a giant firecracker, not a bomb. Two female students were injured.
