Autumn staycation packing list: what to bring for a UK break

When it comes to deciding what to pack for an autumn staycation in the UK, I consider myself quite the expert. Not a month goes by that I don’t pile three days’ worth of essentials into a carry-on or weekender and throw it in the boot of the car – which is exactly where my trusty Barbour waterproof coat and Hunter wellies live, as it happens. Because regardless of the season, layers are the key to a successful staycation wardrobe, and prepping for crisp mornings, muddy walks and pub dinners is paramount.

Autumn is simply made for this kind of getaway and, in my opinion, it’s the best season to book a cosy cabin in the English woods or one of the best countryside hotels near London. I’d also argue it’s the best season for fashion. Chunky knitwear, clompy boots and – for 2026 – flannel and plaid shirting, all make for an effortlessly put-together but oh-so comfortable look that works even better when it’s a little muddy, a little windswept and accompanied by a glass of English sparkling. What’s not to love?

Below is my essentials checklist for a three-day staycation in the UK, featuring knitwear brands I really rate (not just for quality but price-point, too), all-weather outerwear that will last a decade and wardrobe staples that you’ll wear in the city as well as the countryside.
