On Location peels back the curtain on some of your favourite films, television shows, and more. This time, we ask: where was Finding Emily filmed?
If you’ve caught the tube recently, eyes averted from your smartphone, you may have seen actor Spike Fearn brandishing a sticky-note-style piece of paper with ‘Missing: a digit of Emily’s number’. Behind him, the Emily in question – played by Australian actor Angourie Rice.
This, it turns out, is among the most hotly anticipated British romantic comedies in years, with a cast including Minnie Driver, Ella Maisy Purvis and Timothy Innes starring. Coming from the producers of Bridget Jones’ Diary and Love Actually, it’s little surprise that the rom-com has been released to a fair share of positive reviews.
In the movie, we follow lovesick musician Owen (Spike Fearn) embark on a mission, aided by a psychology student, to find the girl (Emily, played by Angourie Rice) whose number he received, with a missing digit. What follows is a heartwarming expedition across their university campus and into the nearest city. But where was Finding Emily filmed?
When asked in an interview with Picturehouse Cinemas what it was about Finding Emily that made her want to tell the story, director Alicia MacDonald said, “It was somewhere else that wasn’t London – it was Manchester. That was a really cool, specific place that I really loved.”
While many movies transform one location into another for ease of production, the team behind Finding Emily stayed true to the script, and a majority of filming took place across the University of Manchester campus.
