Staffordshire’s Tawny Hotel is undoubtedly one of the most luxurious offerings around the West Midlands. Set amongst the Staffordshire countryside, the property offers immersion in nature and acres of space, and its new self catering properties – or Fledglings – make group travel in the British countryside easier than ever. The three cottages offer spacious rooms and total privacy for up to ten people, and the largest of the three – Bath House – has three stories, a sauna and a heated pool. We visited as ten adults, and there was more than enough space for all of us to feel at home. Each bedroom is designed differently, with a gentle green colour palette and luxurious furnishings throughout (we loved the master bedroom, with a comfortable king-size bed overlooking the courtyard), and there are multiple living spaces, including a large dining room and a downstairs living room with a handy small kitchen and cocktail bar.
The outdoor pool was a real treat, particularly as we visited on a chilly October weekend and were pleased to find it pleasantly warm throughout our stay, but it was the sauna and large hot tub that really hit the spot for an early morning or late evening indulgence. Looking over the misty private lake from the comfort of the warm sauna was a dreamy way to start or end the day, and we made use of it every day. Dogs are welcome for a small fee – our two loved playing together in the private gardens and watching ducks swim across the lake – and the team will even leave a small toy and treat for them to enjoy during their stay.
Guests can indulge in various experiences during their stay, including a BBQ in the Big Green Egg on the outdoor patio or an afternoon tea, but we opted for the Family Feast, which meant two chefs from the hotel came by to prepare and serve a three-course meal, plus wine. This allowed us to have time together as a group without having to think about dinner, but still enjoy the intimacy and freedom of having our own space. The team even cleaned up afterwards, leaving us to move downstairs to the lounge without having to share chores before bed.
It’s worth knowing that the Bath House is pretty far from The Tawny hotel (about a 10-minute drive, or a 40-minute walk), but if you do want to make the effort to visit, you’ll have access to the hotel spa, its yoga classes, wild swimming, bikes and restaurants. But for those who want to be surrounded by nature, in total privacy, but with the knowledge that you can call the hotel staff for anything you need help with, this unique spot is a no-brainer.
