ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – Two teens escaped from the St. Louis Juvenile Detention Center Tuesday evening.
A News 4 photographer spotted numerous squad cars and a police canine outside the St. Louis Juvenile Detention Center at Vandeventer and Enright. The state-run facility sits across from two schools. One of the escapees, a 17-year-old, was being held on murder charges. The other teen is 15.
News 4 confirmed The older teen’s charge is in connection with a shooting that happened in the early morning of September 7 near the Archgrounds. That’s when 29-year-old Brandon Scott was found shot dead in his car.
Two people escaped from the St. Louis Juvenile Detention Center Tuesday evening, police tell News 4.
Both the St. Louis Metropolitan Police and 22nd Judicial Circuit Court told News 4 they cannot release photos of the juveniles or names because of their ages.
Jacob Long, Chief Communications Officer with the 22nd Judicial Circuit Court, which operates the detention center, sent the following statement:
“Last night at approximately 7:15 p.m., two juveniles are believed to have escaped from the 22nd Judicial Circuit Court’s Juvenile Detention Center on Enright Avenue. Staff worked with local law enforcement to search the outside of the facility extensively, but were unable to locate the two youth. One juvenile is 17-years-old and was being held on murder in the first degree. The other is also 15-years-old and was being held on two counts of tampering in the first degree, three counts of resisting/interfering with an arrest, detention or stop, one count of tampering with electronic monitoring equipment, and violations of terms of release. No injuries were reported and the facility was placed on lock down. Police continue to assist the Court in investigating the incident as the search for the two juveniles remains ongoing.”
Four teens escaped on October 16 and only one of them is back in custody. Four teens also escaped on September 4 and two of them are back in custody.
Teens escaping the center over the last few months is something the 22nd Judicial Court recognizes is a problem, and Long said they are actively working to address safety concerns including security reinforcement and improving training and protocols on site.
Long also tells News 4 that even though some recent juveniles who have gone on the run have violent criminal offenses, a majority of the children in the system are not offenders of violent crime or are victims of abuse and neglect receiving protection.
