The prize-winner and a guest will check into Gstaad Palace, a century-old castle-hotel which sits on a hill overlooking the glitzy Alpine town of Gstaad, during the peaceful summer season. Chalet-style rooms have been given an updated twist on classic mountain-lodge interiors – lots of woods and comfortable fabrics – and most have views of the handsome valley below.
Also included on one evening is supper for two at Le Grand Restaurant, the hotel’s elegant fine-dining spot with views of the peaks. The menu here changes daily: traditional Alpine dishes such as Alpstein chicken served with locally-grown vegetables sit alongside alternatives that might include penne alla vodka with lobster or Asian-inspired salads.
The Swiss Alps in summer are quieter than during the ski season. Visitors can hike along the 370 miles of paths that wind through the mountains and valleys, go sailing or windsurfing on the lakes, scale summits and explore the charming villages that dot the region.
