Day one
Morning
Skip your first meal of the day and rent a bike for a DIY bakery tour. It’s a neat way to combine two of the city’s biggest loves: cycling and elite-level pastries. Start at Juno in Østerbro, where cardamom buns are a speciality, before heading to Kong Hans Bakery for incredible slices of pâté en croute and delights from a kitchen that serves two Michelin-starred restaurant Kong Hans Kælder. The final stop is Riviera, a neighbourhood bakery run by Italian chef Chiara Barla, where you’ll find a delicious orange-glazed cinnamon swirl.
Afternoon
Head to Nyhavn, the colourful harbour in the centre of the city, and grab some photos before a Hey Captain boat tour from Ofelia Plads nearby. These small group tours take you past the city’s stunning harbourside buildings, from the modern Opera House to colourful Christianshavn.
If you feel like it, then take a walk along the harbour to the Little Mermaid, passing the royal palaces at Amalienborg as you do. Or you could make like a Dane and enjoy a beer at Ofelia Plads instead.
Evening
Eating at a long table with soon-to-be friends is a beloved Danish tradition. Kanalhuset offers communal dining every evening at 7pm, while at DesignMuseum Danmark, communal dining takes place twice a month in its pretty gardens in April, May and June.
Round off the night with a stop at one of the city’s best cocktail bars. Ruby mixes beautiful cocktails in a historic canalside setting, while Bird blends jazz and a listening club vibe with its drinks.
Day two
Morning
It’s time to try out another Copenhagen quirk: harbour swimming. People in Copenhagen swim at all times of the year, even when the harbour freezes. At La Banchina, you can book a sauna and swim in its secluded harbour pool before grabbing breakfast in the cafe. Book a slot a few weeks before you arrive – it’s popular!
