I know I’m biased, but as far as hen dos (or bachelorette parties, for Statesiders) go – mine was about as good as they get. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not an easy customer. A classic Type A bride, I had a series of criteria for my bridesmaids to consider. A place that feels special, with all the modcons you’d expect, but that goes one (or two, or three) steps further. Somewhere that had every whim and desire accounted for before you’ve even considered them. There needed to be plenty of room so guests didn’t feel too on top of each other, but at the same time have a cosy, snug feel to it.

Luckily for me, the girls nailed the brief. Almer Manor is a historic country estate (with parts dating back to the 1600s) hidden in the rolling Dorset countryside. It’s a place that reveals itself in layers – the imposing house takes your breath away on arrival, standing proudly with its red-bricked roof and turreted windows overlooking the gardens – but that’s just the beginning.
Inside, there are two living rooms, one large enough to comfortably accommodate all the guests on plush sofas for afternoon games or movie nights, and a slightly smaller snug for splinter groups to unwind or have a quiet doze. Both spaces are thoughtfully designed, with a classic countryside feel – think stone alcoves, low-slung beams, majestic fireplaces – offset with splashes of colour; a Prussian rug, a burnt orange-coloured sofa, playful artwork.
