There are many ways to enjoy Europe, but a scenic train journey in Italy has to be up there. The country, blessed with a plethora of natural beauty, from dramatic cliffs, picturesque towns and cobbled streets, is a visual delight – one that deserves your undivided attention.
It’s no surprise, then, that internet searches for “Italy train route” have spiked by 390 per cent worldwide over the last year, with one specific route proving to be the most popular by far according to Rome2Rio.
The trip planning site notes that searches for trips from Naples to Sorrento have exceeded the 2 million mark.
The gateway to the Amalfi Coast, data shows many are dreaming of a journey to the popular cliffside destination known for incredible seafood pasta and glamour. Meanwhile, Naples, the undisputed birthplace of pizza, is also famous for its proximity to Pompeii and artistic roots. Experts at Rome2Rio analysed internal search data across 2025 to reveal the most popular scenic rail corridors across Italy.
Travelling by train can be a great option for those who want to bask in the scenery of a region, whether that’s coastlines, mountains or vineyards. It’s much better for the environment, and can be an experience in itself. If you fancy a train journey in Italy but want to explore a different side of the country, there are so many routes to choose from, including Florence to Pisa, La Spezia to Corniglia, Milan to Lake Como and Bologna to Rimini to name a few.
Second, after Naples to Sorrento, Florence to Pisa had 1.81 million searches. A shorter journey, travellers can visit two of Tuscany’s most popular cities, going from Florence’s rolling countryside to the iconic Pisa.
In third spot was La Spezia to Corniglia, going from the dramatic Ligurian coastline and taking you to Cinque Terre – five beloved fishing villages next to the cliffsides above the Mediterranean. Corniglia, the most secluded of the five, is the final destination.
