In a picturesque square in the centre of Bath sits a row of interconnected Georgian Townhouses, where Francis Hotel once welcomed The Beatles, and has recently undergone a modernisation that showcases the best of the city to those popping by. As a first-time visitor to Bath, I appreciated the ideal location – overlooking the green Queen Square, with the must-visit Royal Crescent just a five minute walk away. We spent a pleasant day slowly meandering through the town’s shops, just a couple of streets away from the hotel, before ending up at Pulteney Bridge: one of the few bridges in the world with shops running along both sides. Coincidentally, that stop was recommended by the friendly staff member who checked us in, and asked if we knew the city well. When I said no, she shared a handy card with a series of recommendations from Gerry, the doorman at the hotel who greeted us with a warm welcome each time we entered and left the property.
There are 98 rooms here, which I was surprised to learn – it has the look and feel of a boutique hotel with just a handful of rooms, and the fact that decor and size differs depending on room type reinforces this feeling. I enjoyed the Robert’s radio playing when we first entered our room, and was impressed by the size of the space, which had a bed, desk, sofa and still plenty of room to swing a cat. Some rooms have views of Queen Square, but the impressive John Wood Suite offers the best opportunity for people watching.
Well worth mentioning is the hotel’s restaurant, Emberwood. Before visiting, my research told me that this was a popular spot for locals – always a good sign – but I was surprised to be quite so impressed with the atmosphere and inventive menu. The crispy Porthilly oyster with Somerset lardo and spiced ketchup was a memorable way to kick off the meal, and the excellent produce really stood out. The highlight, though, was the retro dessert trolley which whizzes around: staff will walk you through everything on offer, and you can select what appeals most. It’s worth popping into the sleek bar for a nightcap; martini fans will love the icy cold serving with a twist.
Worth knowing: the hotel’s spa will open in spring 2026, which would be a welcome addition for guests who want to experience what the city is best known for. Additionally, the property adds a five percent service charge upon checkout: this is entirely optional. Abigail Malbon
