In Loving Memory of James David Van Der Beek (1977–2026)

It is with deep sorrow that we honor the life and legacy of James David Van Der Beek, a gifted actor whose work touched audiences around the world.

Best known for his iconic portrayal of Dawson Leery on Dawson’s Creek (1998–2003), James became a defining presence of a generation. His earnest performance captured the vulnerability, hope, and emotional intensity of youth, earning him a lasting place in television history.

He later delighted audiences with his self-aware and humorous turn as a fictionalized version of himself on the cult favorite Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 (2012–2013), and continued to showcase his range as FBI agent Elijah Mundo on CSI: Cyber (2015–2016) and as Matt Bromley in the first season of FX’s acclaimed drama Pose (2018).

On the big screen, his memorable performances included Varsity Blues (1998), Texas Rangers (2001), The Rules of Attraction (2002), Formosa Betrayed (2009), Labor Day (2013), and Bad Hair (2020). Across genres—from drama to satire—James brought sincerity, depth, and unmistakable presence to every role he embraced.

In August 2023, James was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, a battle he faced with quiet courage and dignity. He chose to keep his diagnosis private until November 2024, sharing that he had been “privately dealing with this diagnosis” and taking steps toward healing with the unwavering support of his beloved family. In November 2025, he announced plans to auction cherished memorabilia from Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues to help cover treatment costs—an act that reflected both his resilience and transparency during a profoundly personal journey.

James Van Der Beek passed away on February 11, 2026, at the age of 48.

He leaves behind a body of work that will continue to inspire, comfort, and resonate with audiences for years to come. More than his performances, he will be remembered for his sincerity, strength, and the authenticity he brought both to the screen and to his life.

His talent will be deeply missed. His legacy will endure.

May he rest in peace.
