According to a recent Skyscanner survey, boozed-up travellers, entitled queue-cutters and overpackers are among the most frustrating traveller types to encounter. The flight-booking site quizzed 2,000 flyers about their biggest bugbears when travelling by plane – and most of the results come as little surprise to us.
At the bottom of the list, 13 per cent of those surveyed said that queueing at the gate long before boarding starts is one of the most annoying travel habits. While we all appreciate the benefit of securing an overhead compartment spot for hand luggage on a short-haul escape, the rush – followed by 20 minutes of standing still – is often regarded as a travel ‘ick’. Speaking of, clapping when the plane lands was voted a cringy habit by 20 per cent of participants; internalise that relief next time, perhaps?

Number 14 is taking shoes and socks off on the plane. While tired travellers sandwiching their sunburnt trotters beside the seat in front of them makes for hilarious viewing on social media feeds, 22 per cent declared it a no-no.
Keen recliners, beware. Your back may ache after a week of Sangria-fuelled worming across the dancefloor at the hotel disco, but 40 per cent said reclining at any point of the flight was one of the most annoying habits, making it the fifth most frustrating on the list. 74 per cent said you should ask the person behind if they mind you reclining, while 81 per cent would support a rule banning passengers from reclining during food and drink service.
That said, 12 per cent of those polled admitted that they’re guilty of some of the annoying habits themselves. Note: 12 per cent were willing to own up. A quarter admitted to taking shoes and socks off on the plane, and 19 per cent are guilty of holding things up at security.
