For security reasons, Bangkok Remand Prison is suspending inmate visitations tomorrow (Tuesday), when fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is scheduled to return to Thailand.
A large number of Thaksin’s supporters are expected to gather in front of the jail, which is on Ngamwongwan Road in Chatuchak district.
The prison normally allows visits from Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm.
This time, Thaksin has announced that he will end his self-imposed exile and return to Thailand at 9am tomorrow morning. He has, on numerous previous occasions, announced his return date, only to cancel his plans.
His private jet is due to land at a Don Muang airport, where he will be formally arrested, taken to the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Office and then to the Bangkok Remand Prison.
Thaksin faces a total of 10 years in prison, on three convictions, if he does actually set foot on Thai soil.
Many political observers do not believe that Thaksin will arrive tomorrow to face incarceration.
