Political parties which object to primary vote should raise the matter with the Election Commission to find a solution instead of asking the National Legislative Assembly to amend the political party law or to ask the National Council for Peace and Order to invoke Section 44 of the interim Constitution to scrap primary vote, said NLA vice president Surachai Liangboonlertchai on Thursday.

He explained that the NLA proposed primary vote in order to allow the public to have the right to participate in the selection of election candidates by political parties and amending the law to scrap primary vote would be time-consuming.

Political parties’ claim that primary vote will delay their selection of election candidates is a completely separate issue which the parties should discuss with the EC to work out a solution.

Mr Surachai said that if parties want the political roadmap to be intact and the election to proceed in accordance with the roadmap, then they should not ask for amendment of the political party law or to scrap primary vote.
