Beautiful blue waters? Tick. Super special swim spots? Tick. An excellent Gyros shop, family-run fish restaurants, and taverna-style dining that always hits the mark? Tick, tick, tick! But those are just a few of the reasons I love Milos. Ask me my favourite thing about the island, and my answer is an easy one. It’s the abundance of traditional waterfront boathouses, or Syrmas, that set Milos apart from any other Greek island I’ve ever visited. These homes sit right on the edge of the ocean and redefine the idea of a ‘sea view’.

Syrmas were originally used to house boats or used as fisherman living quarters in the winter. Today, many of these spaces have been reimagined and are bookable to call home – even if just for a few days – for lucky island visitors like me.

I struck gold with the private Syrma I stayed in on Fyrmapatamos, which is often described as one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. It’s known for its exceptionally blue waters and the dusky-pink clay rock formations that cocoon it. The beach itself is worth venturing to even for a day visit, but staying here on this peaceful, postcard-perfect cove had me – pardon the nautical pun – falling hook, line and sinker in love with Milos.
