The V&A South Kensington is honouring Freddie Mercury, one of the most-loved figures in rock music, with a new exhibit this autumn, as a trail celebrates the 80th birthday of Queen frontman.
Freddie Mercury | Splendid Things runs from 24 October 2026 to 17 January 2027, and showcases eight legendary looks from the rockstar’s career across six stops curated by award-winning designer Tom Piper. The looks span the 1970s and ’80s, with highlights including a striking monochrome ensemble Freddie wore for an early Queen gig at Imperial College that featured on the cover of Queen’s debut album in 1973, and Wendy de Smet’s ‘Mercury Wing’ catsuit worn on stage for the Night at the Opera tour.

The trail has been curated in collaboration with Freddie’s former fiancée, close friend and confidante of 20 years, Mary Austin, who lends seven looks for the three-month display.
