11 best places for a UK Christmas break

The Cotswolds

This quintessentially English region is picture-perfect in any season, but there’s something particularly magical about the Cotswolds at Christmas. The windows of the honey-hued houses glow from candlelight, pubs are jam-packed with locals huddling up by crackling fires and, if you’re lucky, snow covers the rolling hills like a fluffy quilt. Windswept walks along the Cotswold Way are a must, stopping off in small villages en route to refuel at cute cafés or visit independent stores for a spot of last-minute present shopping.

Where to stay: For the ultimate winter retreat, Thyme is the place to be. Set on the Southrop Manor Estate, with its manicured gardens and farmhouse aesthetic, it’s the perfect place to hole up for a decadent festive break. This year, the hotel is hosting a packed programme of festive events, from mince-pie making and Christmas cookery classes to cocktail masterclasses and Bach by Candlelight. London

It doesn’t get much more Christmassy than London in December. The city centre is a treasure trove of festive magic – stroll along Regent Street to see the twinkling angels hovering overhead before popping into some of the shops decked out for the season. There are plenty of wintry activities to choose from, from maze-like markets selling everything from steaming hot chocolate and mulled wine to stocking fillers, to ice skating and festive shows – including A Christmas Carol at The Old Vic Theatre and The Snowman at the Peacock Theatre. For something a little different, head to Christmas at Kew, which returns with new light installations for 2026 as well as its first adults-only evenings.
