The court delivered its order on Friday in response to a request filed by the attorney-general in 2017. The request was for two plots of land of Mr Kasem in Tambon Rim Tai in Chiang Mai’s Mae Rim district and his shares in the Ascon Construction Plc to be confiscated.
The prosecution’s request followed a ruling by the NACC on July 27, 2017 that Mr Kasem, a former Pheu Thai MP for Chiang Mai and former deputy chairman of the Chiang Mai provincial administration organisation, became unusually rich after leaving the post of deputy chairman of the Chiang Mai PAO.
The Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Poltical Position ordered the confiscation of Mr Kasem’s assets. But the confiscated assets combined must not be more than 21.1 million baht worth.
Mr Kasem did not turn up for the court’s ruling but sent his lawyer to represent him. The lawyer said that, according to a new law, a petition can be filed against the ruling. He would discuss this matter with Mr Kasem later.
Mr Kasem, 54, is known to be close to Yaowapa Wongsawat, wife of former prime minister Somchai Wongsawat and younger sister of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
