A network of anti-gambling organizations and youth organizations and the government sector held a publicity campaign to urge World Cup soccer fans not to gamble under the concept of “No Gambling during the World Cup Soccer Tournament” at the Victory Monument on Thursday.

Findings from the Centre To Study Gambling Problem show that more than 2.4 million Thais engaged in illegal betting of soccer matches involving 140 billion baht last year.

However, the most worrisome of the findings is that increasing number of Thai youth are involved in soccer gambling. Focus findings among high-school students show that if they start soccer gambling when they are young, there is a tendency that 82.6 percent of them will continue to gamble than they start other forms of gamble.
