The Department of Special Investigation has seized 60,000 pirated cups of various famous brandnames in a raid on 10 spots in Sampheng area in Bangkok and arrested nine Thai and Chinese suspects, DSI director-general Pol Col Paisit Wongmuang said in a press conference on Thursday.

Pol Paisit said the raid was carried out on June 12 by DSI officials on receiving complaints that a large number of fake cups of various brandnames had been illegally brought into the country, causing considerable damage to patent right holders.

The raid was made following an investigation led by Col Pinij Tangsakul, director of the office of intellectural property cases.

In the raid on 10 spots in Sampheng area, the officials seized a total of 60,000 fake cups of various brandnames such as Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Doraemon, Yeti and Harley Davidson. The market value of the seized pirated products was about 10 million baht, but the cost of the genuine products of this amount is about 60 million baht.

Nine Thai and Chinese suspects were arrested.

“The pirated items may cause a severe impact on the economic system. The government has a policy to seriously conduct suppression on violators of the intellectual property law,” Pol Col Paisit said.

The suspects were initially charged with violating the Trademark Act and Patent Right Act.
