With the approval of the cabinet, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has issued an announcement on Tuesday to continue the state of serious emergency in the southern border provinces of Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani for an additional three months as of June 20.
The serious emergency situation was declared on March 13 in the entire province of Yala with the exception of Betong district, Pattani with the exception of Mae Lan district and Narathiwat with the exception of Su-ngai Kolok district.
The PM’s announcement which was published in the Royal Gazette said that the declaration of serious emergency situation announced on March 13 enabled security forces to ease unrest situation in the three southernmost provinces, to capture several suspected militants and to ensure better safety for people in the restive region.
However, the announcement said that unrest situation continued to persist with suspected militants still carrying out attacks on government officials and innocent civilians with the intention to strike fear among the public and, hence, the need to extend the serious emergency situation in the three provinces for another three months effective as of June 20.
