Despite clamoring for his comeback among certain quarters within his Democrat Party, former prime minister Chuan Leekpai yesterday reiterated that he had no plans to contest for the premiership at the general elections.
“My name will not be on the list for sure,” Chuan answered when asked if he would offer to be one of the three candidates for the premiership on the Democrat Party’s ticket.
Under the new Constitution, parties campaigning in the next elections are required to nominate up to three prime minister candidates to the Election Commission.
The talks about having the 79-year-old former prime minister and former leader of the Democrat making a comeback were heightened by the recent poll victory of the opposition coalition in Malaysia that saw 93-year-old Mahathir Mohamad reclaim the premiership.
Chuan is openly in support for Abhisit Vejjajiva to lead the party into the elections.
