The new government in Malaysia will introduce English competency tests for top civil servants, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today, according to The Starnewspaper.
“The English language is important and must be practised by high level civil servants,” he was quoted as saying at a press conference.
Mahathir said that it is imperative for top civil servants to have good command of the English language as they have meetings overseas with international figures.
The Star also reported that during the press conference, Mahathir also mentioned that the government will review co-curricular education from kindergarten to university level.
A taskforce consisting of non-government experts will be formed to look into the education system in international countries to find ways Malaysia can improve on its education system.
