Singer-songwriter Arlo Parks on her favourite places in the world

Written by Travel Adventures

‘Going to galleries on tour is like having an anchor in every city. I visited Dublin for the first time two years ago to perform at Whelan’s pub. It was a lot of fun; I definitely had my fair share of Guinness and the next day I went to the National Gallery with my bass player Sam Harding. We saw the Zurich Young Portrait Prize, this brilliant exhibition of works by kids as young as 10. It was so playful and explorative. I’ve always been interested in abstract art – I like Agnes Martin – and I saw some of the same originality in these pieces.’ nationalgallery.ie

‘It’s the entrance that really gets me. You’re walking along in the red-light district and then the pavement suddenly opens up. It’s like entering a portal. I did my first show here as part of the Reeperbahn Festival in 2019 and remember feeling so nervous. Sometimes I have these real spikes of anxiety, and this venue was among the biggest I’d played. In the end, it turned out to be one of the first times I experienced people knowing my tunes. Strangers singing the words to a song you wrote in your bedroom is such a special feeling.’ mojo.de
