A 15-year-old girl scratched by her little puppy on the neck in December last year died on April 20 at Nong Khai hospital.
The teen became the country’s eighth victim to die from rabies this year.
According to her family, she had raised a 2-month puppy dog at home and on one day she was scratched on the neck by the puppy.
Since the scratch was slight, she did not go to see the doctor.
It was until April 17, she turned unusual having symptoms of fatigue, nausea, and saliva flowing out of her mouth uncontrollably.
She was later admitted to the hospital where she died later of rabies.
Nong Khai health officer Dr Somchaichote Piyawatwera said the hospital has collected cerebrospinal fluid and hair roots from the victims for laboratory examination at the Department of Medical Science, and told all her family members associated with her during the period to have vaccination immediately.
So far this year, rabies has claimed lives of eight people. The other victims were in Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Surin, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Singkhla, Trang, and Phatthalung.
Last year, 11 patients died from rabies, while in 2016 14 people died, and from 2012 to 2015, five people died each year from the deadly disease.
